It was a great Swiftian irony that the shining moment of realization that is Ground Trouble Jaw first saw its release as a modest, digital-only EP in 2008.Here we right that wrong, and pair it with 2011s Walt Wolfman EP, very much a spiritual twin of Ground Trouble Jaw.It was the first release that folded the tireless, vying personalities of Richard Swifts art - the art brut RB of Onasis; the John Fante saloon player of The Novelist; the Brill Building songcraft of Dressed Up For the Letdown - into a singular, succinct artistic statement.

You can feel his joy and the responsibility of his personal discovery. ![]() ![]() He was an outsider-pop wanderkind who could do more with one worn, old mic than most men could with a high-end studio, taking the holy moment and making it eternal. Let Paul Lester be your guide through the maze of new bands, to fall upon the timeless charm of Richard Swift. To that end, he uses budget equipment, mainly a four-track recorder, which is not entirely authentic but a nice gesture. While touring with his live band, the Sons of National Freedom, he released two records, Walking Without Effort (2001) and The Novelist (2003). But after touring with My Morning Jacket, Swift made a huge splash at the 2006 South by Southwest festival. I dont want it to be just seen as a record of me bitching, and all the music industry is fucked, he says. But it is about my relationship with the record industry and how I let circumstances get on top of me.
